Down From the Mountain

This painting depicts Aragorn receiving Frodo and Sam when they were rescued from Mount Doom. It's a bit busy, but I learned a lot while making it.  I have always wished that Tolkien had given us more details of what is one of the most dramatic moments of the epic.

Reminds me of Pieta and deposition of Christ paintings in the body positions.

But I really love the Eagles :-)

Thank you very much! I love the eagles too, and hope to do more scenes with them ^_^

I'm glad you brought up the resemblance of this painting to religious imagery, as it is deliberate. In fact I was very much thinking of the Pieta when I did this, and also Sam's pose is a little similar to poor St. Sebastian (although I think Boromir might have been a more appropriate subject to practice on.) I appreciate your positive reaction, as I am a little shy of posting my more "religious" LOtR art. Thanks to you I will now cross my fingers and post another such painting shortly. :)

One thing I simply must know-- where did you get that avatar with those darling little monks and their cats? That's the cutest thing I've seen in days! ^_^

I was thinking of Michelangelo's Deposition though.



The monk is St. Francis and ink_gypsy made it for my birthday last month. I love it :-)
