"Tater Tales" :)

Sam and his Gaffer are the salt of the earth, and they're harvesting spring taters!  These golden nuggets were left in the ground the previous fall, and due to a warm winter they've grown huge!   Now Frodo has come to join in the fun as Sam and his dad recite more esoteric tater lore than he could ever remember!  




NOTE:  I'm currently having an issue with my cousin's server.  Almost all of my images are down on both blogs.  The ones that are running have been saved to Dreamwidth's low-capacity image hosting service and won't be high-resolution, I'm afraid.  

Hope Anton can get this sorted quickly :P

I can't remember ever seeing an artist's rendering of the Gaffer. Love the flowers and butterfly!

Thanks! The butterfly is from a digital collection I have which was made from photographs from the Oxford University butterfly collection :)

I've had the pleasure of knowing several old rural folks just like the Gaffer, and I love him so much I've actually made two models of him. The first one was featured in my image for lbilover, 'Soused.' Unfortunately it's vanished for the moment due to server issues.

The classic rendering of the Gaffer is Stephen Hickman's 'The Black Rider,' where Hamfast tells the ghoul where he can go. It's fantastic, even if hobbits don't actually have beards ^^;
