"Confidante"

 Everyone knows, of course, that Sam is much more than just the Bag End gardener.   He is the friend, helper, hero and confidante who the Bagginses can trust with their deepest problems and secrets.  (Well, most of the time, anyway...)  ^^;

 

So what is it this time?  Is Frodo confessing that he ate all the scones Bilbo just made for a birthday party?  That he can't make heads nor tails of the strange book he just found at a rummage sale?  Has he just come back from a visit to the Woody End, where he's fallen in love with an elf??  ;D  Or is he just saying he suspects Sam's been into the beer barrel again?  

 

You decide what grand secret poor, patient Sam has to keep next!  

 

Foot hair and hobbity attributes are kept to a minimum here to make this digital painting a more versatile part of my portfolio.   But you and I know what inspired this  :)

I love the soft, dreamy light, like a sunset, casting its glow over them. They look rather taken with each other - rather than the book they are pretending to study!

Thank you so very much! :) Your comment is a relief to me, as things were so silent around here I thought perhaps the picture didn't post properly!

I love the romantic side of Frodo & Sam-- the daring rescues, the heartfelt conversations. They would be a great subject for an old-fashioned Valentine's card, the kind I would give my mother. It's a subject I never ever get tired of, because it doesn't contain the subtle male/female tension which I always feel when some male acquaintance of mine shows up with flowers at my door. Really, when someone shows up like that, my first feelings are usually dismay and irritation. But Sam and Frodo are on a more equal footing despite their class differences, with them there is no sexual pressure (unless I want there to be some!) and their high-minded romance has been sublimated into a heroic story. In other words, Frodo and Sam have all the love, trust and romance I crave, without any of the nastier real-life pressures and tensions.

I hope that made some sense anyway, it's still early here ^_^;

I've been studying a lot of classical paintings lately too, trying to replicate the lighting I see in older art. One thing I'm learning is that a dark background helps bring out the figures. I need to work more on my lighting and composition, that's for sure! :)

I have been terribly behind of late, in comments and posting, but I am going to try and get back into better habits. I'm definitely glad to have scanned back on the entries I have neglected, so I didn't miss this one :)
